::WACK!: Art and the Feminist Revolution Feb 17th , 2008 through May 12, 2008 @ PS1 P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center presents WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution, the first comprehensive, historical exhibition to examine the international foundations and legacy of feminist art. Organized by MOCA Ahmanson Curatorial Fellow Connie Butler for The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, WACK! focuses on the crucial period of the 1970s, during which the majority of feminist activism and artmaking occurred internationally. Praising the exhibition, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center Director Alanna Heiss notes: "In addition to exploring international occurrences of feminist art, the show emphasizes New York's role in the movement, as well as its relationship with each artist involved. The exhibition spans the period of 1965 to 1980 and includes 120 artists and artist groups from the United States, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. WACK! includes work by women who operated within the political structure of feminism as well as women who did not necessarily embrace feminism as part of their practice, but were impacted by the movement. Comprising work in a broad range of media—including painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, and performance art—the exhibition is organized around themes based on media, geography, formal concerns, collective aesthetic, and political impulses. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue. A series of performances and panel discussions presented in the Third Floor Main Gallery will connect featured artists with younger generations inspired by feminism.

::Roberto Carlos in Concert - Friday, May 23rd, at 8 pm @WAMU THEATER Madison Square Garden, 7th Avenue & 32nd Street, New York City. For ticket information: (212) 307-4757 Roberto Carlos is a Grammy Award-winning Brazilian singer, who has achieved a great deal of success and recognition in his almost 50 year old career. Most of his songs are written in partnership with his friend, the singer and songwriter Erasmo Carlos. Roberto Carlos has sold over 100 million albums around the world, making him one of the best selling Latin American artists. Influenced by his idol, Elvis Presley and the 1950s rock revolution, he rose to stardom as the main figure of the 60s musical movement known as Jovem Guarda (Young guard, in opposition to the 'old guard' of Brazilian music), which was the first manifestation of the Brazilian pop rock movement. Since then, he has been called 'O Rei' (the King). In 1989, Roberto Carlos became one of the only Brazilians ever to win a Grammy Award in the category of Best Latin Pop Album with Roberto Carlos / Tolo. In the 1990s, Roberto Carlos became the first Latin American artist to sell more albums than the Beatles (in 1994, having by then sold over 70 million copies of his albums). In the mid'90s, with the retro Jovem Guarda wave, Roberto Carlos, who was worn out among the younger generations who had only known his romantic and sentimental hits directed at a middleaged audience, had his importance recuperated by young rockers such as Cássia Eller, Chico Science e Nação Zumbi, Barão Vermelho, and Skank, who recorded Rei, a tribute to him with his old Jovem Guarda hits.

Latest News and InformationsLATEST NEWS & ARTICLES NYC, 05.11.2008 (By Bob Egelko - San Francisco Chronicle) - Next President Might Be Gentler on Pot Clubs Ever since California voters became the first in the nation to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, the state has faced unyielding opposition from the federal government, which insists it has the power to prohibit a drug it considers useless and dangerous. That could all change with the next presidential election. As the candidates prepare for a May 20 primary in Oregon, one of 12 states with a California-style law, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois has become an increasingly firm advocate of ending federal intervention and letting states make their own rules when it comes to medical marijuana. His Democratic rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, is less explicit, recently softening a pledge she made early in the campaign to halt federal raids in states with medical marijuana laws. But she has expressed none of the hostility that marked the response of her husband's administration to California's initiative, Proposition 215. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee-in-waiting, has gone back and forth on the issue - promising a medical marijuana patient at one campaign stop that seriously ill patients would never face arrest under a McCain administration, but ultimately endorsing the Bush administration's policy of federal raids and prosecutions. Political battles over exempting medical patients from marijuana laws have been fought mostly in statehouses and at ballot boxes since 1996, when California voters repealed state criminal penalties for those who used the drug with their doctor's approval. But the federal government has played an important role in limiting the scope of those state laws, and their effectiveness over the next four years may be determined by the next president. Bill Clinton's position President Bill Clinton's administration opposed the California law from the start and won a court case allowing it to shut nonprofit organizations that supplied medical marijuana to members. Clinton's Justice Department also tried to punish California doctors who recommended marijuana to their patients by revoking their authority to prescribe any drugs, but federal courts backed the doctors. The Bush administration has gone further, raiding medical marijuana growers and clinics, prosecuting suppliers under federal drug laws after winning a U.S. Supreme Court case, and pressuring commercial property owners to evict marijuana dispensaries by threatening legal action. The administration has also blocked a University of Massachusetts researcher's attempt to grow marijuana for studies of its medical properties. Since 2001, federal prosecutors have won convictions in at least 28 California drug cases where defendants claimed they were supplying or using medical marijuana, according to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Prosecutors have filed charges in 22 more cases, and authorities have raided 10 growers or dispensaries without filing charges, the group says. The presidential candidates haven't discussed the issue in speeches or debates, but medical marijuana advocates regularly questioned them in Iowa and New Hampshire. The most sweeping changes were proposed by second-tier candidates - Democrats Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich and Chris Dodd and Republican Ron Paul called for repealing federal criminal penalties for marijuana - but of the remaining contenders, Obama has been the friendliest to advocates of medical marijuana. At a November appearance in Audubon, Iowa, Obama recalled that his mother had died of cancer and said he saw no difference between doctor-prescribed morphine and marijuana as pain relievers. He said he would be open to allowing medical use of marijuana, if scientists and doctors concluded it was effective, but only under ''strict guidelines,'' because he was ''concerned about folks just kind of growing their own and saying it's for medicinal purposes.'' Obama went a step further in an interview in March with the Mail Tribune newspaper in Medford, Ore. While still expressing qualms about patients growing their own supply or getting it from ''mom-and-pop stores,'' he said it is ''entirely appropriate'' for a state to legalize the medical use of marijuana, ''with the same controls as other drugs prescribed by doctors.'' In response to recent questions from The Chronicle about medical marijuana, Obama's campaign - the only one of the three contenders to reply - endorsed a hands-off federal policy. ''Voters and legislators in the states - from California to Nevada to Maine - have decided to provide their residents suffering from chronic diseases and serious illnesses like AIDS and cancer with medical marijuana to relieve their pain and suffering,'' said campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt. ''Obama supports the rights of states and local governments to make this choice - though he believes medical marijuana should be subject to (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) regulation like other drugs,'' LaBolt said. He said the FDA should consider how marijuana is regulated under federal law, while leaving states free to chart their own course. Obama would end dea raids LaBolt also said Obama would end U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration raids on medical marijuana suppliers in states with their own laws. Those raids have been the focus of Hillary Clinton's comments on the issue. At a July campaign event in Manchester, N.H., she told a medical marijuana advocate that she would end the federal raids, according to Granite Staters for Medical Marijuana, which recorded the exchange. But the candidate was less absolute in a more recent interview with the Willamette Week newspaper in Hillsboro, Ore. ''I don't think it's a good use of federal law enforcement resources to be going after people who are supplying marijuana for medicinal purposes,'' Clinton said in the April 5 interview. But when asked whether she would stop the raids, she replied, ''What we should do is prioritize what the DEA should be doing, and that would not be a high priority. There's a lot of other, more important work that needs to be done.'' Clinton has also said she opposes repealing criminal penalties for marijuana, but told advocates in October that the government should conduct more research ''into what, if any, medical benefits it has.'' McCain has taken a variety of positions, according to comments recorded by medical marijuana advocates. At an April 2007 campaign kickoff event, when asked if he would end federal raids, he said, ''I would let states decide that issue.'' But less than two months later, he said he would not end the raids. Then, in November, he promised a man who described himself as a seriously ill marijuana patient that he would ''do everything in my power'' to make sure the man was never arrested for using the drug. No policy paper While maintaining that medical experts considered marijuana ineffectual and potentially dangerous, McCain promised at the same November event in New Hampshire to consult with experts and issue an ''in-depth policy paper'' on the topic within a few days. McCain's campaign has not responded to media inquiries, and marijuana advocates say the policy paper was never issued. He was also asked during a November conference call whether the federal government should override the will of the people in states with medical marijuana laws. ''Medical marijuana is not something that the, quote, people want,'' McCain replied. Bruce Mirken, a spokesman for the advocacy group Marijuana Policy Project, said he remains hopeful that the federal climate will improve, no matter who becomes president. ''All it takes,'' he said, ''is for the Justice Department to say, 'Leave these states alone.' __________________ NY, 02.28.08 (by BAM) - Dance Grupo Corpo, returns with the New York premieres of Benguelê Following its acclaimed performances at BAM as part of the 2002 and 2005 Next Wave Festivals, one of Brazil’s leading contemporary dance companies, Grupo Corpo, returns with the New York premieres of Benguelê (1998) and Breu (2007). The works display the popular troupe’s Afro-Brazilian flavored fusion of ballet, jazz, and modern dance infused with the polyrhythms of Latin and African dance. Rodrigo Pederneiras creates works that are as rich and multifaceted as Brazil itself. The 21-member company dances with razor-edge precision, and displays a sleek and supple versatility. The Guardian (UK) has said Pederneiras “has developed a style that perfectly showcases the company’s eclectic gifts. The larky energy of carnival and the pulse of the street thrums across the smooth classical surface of their dancing. As they coil, kick, and spin across the stage, every move feels like a celebration of the body energetic and the body beautiful.” Four performances by Grupo Corpo will take place in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Ave.) on March 25, 27–29 at 7:30pm. Tickets—priced at $20, 35, 50, and 60—may be purchased by calling BAM Ticket Services at 718.636.4100 or online at BAM.org. About the program The evening opens with Benguelê, which draws heavily on Brazil’s African roots. Set to a commissioned score by João Bosco, Pederneiras blends Capoeira, Brazilian folklore, and the dances of the Congado—a religious ritual developed by African slaves in Brazil—in this work for 21 dancers. Jornal do Brasil notes that “with its kicking pirouettes and gyrations, Grupo Corpo presents an emotional portrait of Brazilian culture.” The company’s newest piece, Breu, follows in its New York premiere. The piece features a dark score by multiple Latin Grammy-winner Lenine, who according to the The New York Times is “one of the brightest of his generation of eclectic folk-rock and electronic musicians.” The work showcases some of Pederneiras’ most aggressive and confrontational choreography to date with sudden falls and low earth-bound crouches and repetitions. Set within a stark, colorless environment, Pederneiras evokes extreme isolation, deathly inertia, and devastation. About the company Founded by Paulo Pederneiras in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 1975, Grupo Corpo has received widespread acclaim for its vibrant dances in which choreography, lighting, sets, and costumes interplay. Brothers Paulo and Rodrigo Pederneiras (artistic director and choreographer, respectively), Fernando Velloso (set designer), Freusa Zechmeister (costume designer), and the 21-member dance company strive to meld the past, present, and future of their native land into an art that is unmistakably Brazilian. Making its third appearance at BAM, Grupo Corpo was previously presented as part of the 2002 and 2005 Next Wave Festivals. The New York Times has said of the company, “…energy is a synonym for Grupo Corpo. Hip-swiveling samba-like exuberance with ballet pirouettes and jetés.” BAMdialogue with Rodrigo Pederneiras BAM presents a BAMdialogue with Rodrigo Pederneiras moderated by Barbara Browning, Associate Professor of Performance Studies, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University Thursday, on Thursday, March 27 at 6pm in the BAM Rose Cinemas (30 Lafayette Avenue). ___________ NYC, 01.28.08 (by Stephen Leahy) - Biofuels a Lose-Lose Strategy, Critics Say. U.S. biofuels production is driving up food prices around the world, giving billions of poor people a very good reason to hate U.S. policy, say environmentalists. ''The U.S. has led the fight to stem global hunger, now we are creating hunger,'' said Lester Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute, an environmental think tank in Washington. The booming U.S. ethanol industry is diverting enormous amounts food into fuel: 81 million tonnes of grain in 2007 and 114 million tonnes this year, equaling 28 percent of the entire U.S. grain harvest, Brown told IPS. The Climate Project,The Brazilian Endowment for the Arts, The Amazon Coalition. On September 1st, 2006 - the morning after 3 black students attempted to integrate Jena High School's playground by sitting in the traditionally all white area - three nooses were found hanging from branches. After that ''inside joke/warning'' among high school students, racial tension rose beyond school grounds and fights broke out around town. A white man pulled a sawed-off shotgun on black students at a convenience store (they wrestled it away from him), and someone burned down most of the school. When the boys who hung the nooses were caught and the superintendent brushed it off as a ''harmless prank,'' every black student in school crowded under the tree in protest. The District Attorney was called into the school to end the protest. Flanked by police officers he held a pen in the air and told them all ''I can end your life with the stroke of a pen.'' A week later he tried to make good on his promise. On December 4th, another fight broke out at school and the DA charged six black students with attempted second-degree murder. He wrote an open letter to the students in the town's only paper that ''when you are convicted, I will seek the maximum penalty allowed by law.'' The six teenagers are facing 80-100 years in prison without parole. They range in age from 15-17 years old. Their names are: Bryant Purvis, Jesse Beard, Carwin Jones, Mychal Bell, Theodoore Shaw and Rovert Bailey. All of the boys were college-bound, most with offers of scholarships for various achievements. Mychal Bell was recently convicted of aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery. An all-white jury took less than 2 days to convict him. He faces up to 22 years in prison. His sentencing is set for July 31. For seven days filmgoers will have the opportunity to see award-winning films as well as new independent films from and about Brazil. “The festival's primordial role is to serve as a showcase for each year's most enterprising and innovative films made in Brazil,” added Ms. Adriana Dutra. After a successful U.S debut at the Brazilian Film Festival in Miami where it won the Audience Award for Best Film and Best Actress awards, Miguel Falabella’s Urban Snapshots gets its US theatrical premiere in New York City at Tribeca Cinemas, August 6-12, in conjunction with the 5th edition of the annual CineFest Petrobras Brasil. Having released stocks it the New York Stock Exchange, Petrobras has decided to invest on the Festival's naming rights: Cine Fest Petrobras. Since the Festival has become the most important platform for visibility of Brazilian productions in the USA. In the last decade, the Brazilian film industry has grown ever stronger, supporting the appearance of new talents as well as making it possible for many of its pioneering filmmakers to continue working. That is the reason why Inffinito Gruop – the production company run by partners Adriana Dutra, Cláudia Dutra and Viviane B. Spinelli – has organized for second consecutive year, The MarketPlace . A series of panels and seminars that work as a platform for commercialization, distribution and exhibition of Brazilian films in the United States and Latin America. The events will also have representatives from the international movie industry and Brazilian cinematographic institutions. From August 6–11 , screenings will be held at Tribeca Cinemas (54 Varick Street at Laight Street) where the films will be competing for the Best Public Choice Award. The epic tracking shots capturing factories, sprawl, and man-made disasters in Manufactured Landscapes would make Scorsese blush, and The Unforeseen tells the tale of a Texas developer’s hubris with the most extraordinary photography this side of Terrence Malick. Then there’s Israeli filmmaker Shimon Dotan’s Hot House, a Sundance prize winner that burrows into the lives of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. See how these prisons have become the de facto universities for future Fatah and Hamas leaders. Check Program
