Hortaliças brasileiras como jiló, taioba, quiabo, abóboras e maxixe estão chegando às prateleiras dos supermercados norte-americanos. O detalhe é que as hortaliças são cultivadas e fornecidas por agricultores dos Estados Unidos. Os principais consumidores são os cerca de 1 milhão de brasileiros que residem naquele país.

Quando o professor americano Frank Mangan, pesquisador de vegetais étnicos da Universidade de Massachusetts, trouxe do Brasil as primeiras sementes de jiló, há quatro anos, não imaginava o êxito que teria. Ele constatou que o jiló se adaptava facilmente ao clima de Massachusetts.
