LA+ MEDIA MATTERS | Major Gender Imbalance Found in G-Rated Movies

In America's top grossing G-rated films from 1990 to 2004, male characters out-numbered female characters by a 3 to 1 ratio, according to a new study entitled ''Where the Girls Aren't.'' The study was conducted by the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California (USC) for the nonprofit group Dads %26 Daughters (DADs) and its See Jane program.

The report also found that female characters made up just 28 percent of speaking parts and 17 percent of those in crowd scenes. The 101 G-rated films studied included such family favorites as ''Finding Nemo,'' ''Toy Story,'' ''The Lion King,'' ''Monsters, Inc.,'' ''Chicken Run'' and ''The Princess Diaries.''

''When my friends and I would act out movies as kids, we'd play the guys' roles, since they had the most interesting things to do. Decades later, (...)
